THE ENGLISH COTTAGE - THE ART OF A THOUGHTFUL HOME

In our homes, as in life, we search for the best of both worlds.

We want a space that is cozy but not cluttered, spacious but not sprawling, beautiful but not too precious. It is the houses that succeed in the subtle details—the nuances—that feel most welcoming and become true expressions of ourselves.

Steve and I first met our client before she even purchased the lot where her home now stands. It was a corner property in a city neighborhood, surrounded by a hedge that provided a sense of privacy often missing in urban settings. The existing home needed to be torn down, offering her a blank canvas on which to let her imagination run wild.

After living in a home that felt too dark and heavy, she dreamed of a simpler, lighter space: a home that blended her love of English design with her appreciation for modern living. A home that would reflect her story and inspire her to live a life she loved.
Steve took out his pen and paper and sketched his vision, assuring her that this lot could become the foundation for her aspirations.

Throughout the design process, we drew inspiration from the charm of English country homes: steeply pitched roofs, simple exteriors, small-paned windows, stunning stonework, and inviting chimneys.

We selected materials that felt light and bright, pairing them with rustic elements to balance openness with comfort.

Every decision was guided by her story, allowing her to integrate cherished pieces throughout the home.

One of my favorite moments is the stunning portrait of her mother, taking center stage in the living room. Its shimmering silvery blues, warm ambers, and teals became the inspiration for our color palette, illuminating the home with the beauty of a beloved memory.

Art and treasured collections are celebrated in nearly every room. Scenic wallpaper in the study transports you to a desert oasis, while precious blue-and-white china in a custom cabinet draws the eye in the kitchen.

Each addition contributed to the tapestry of the home, making it as unique as the woman who lives there.

Once the last collections were in place, pillows fluffed, and vases filled with flowers, we could step back and appreciate the result: a sanctuary that embraces both rustic and refined, delights in subtlety, and offers the perfect backdrop for new memories to be woven into her story.

xx,
Brooke
